〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Tooru Mutsuki
CHARACTER AGE: 20
SERIES: Tokyo Ghoul:re
CHRONOLOGY: Chapter 63
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Randomize!
BACKGROUND: Tokyo Ghoul:re | Tooru MutsukiOne of the main characters of :re and a central figure in Ken Kaneki's new life as Haise Sasaki. Mutsuki lives in a world that is divided between humans and sub-species known as Ghouls. In order to live, ghouls hunt and feast on human flesh. Needless to say, this does not go over well with the human population and the CCG (or Commission of Counter Ghoul) was created in 1890 to investigate and eliminate ghouls that threaten to harm the human population. Mutsuki is one of many that work for the CCG as an Investigator. Furthermore, he is what as an Quinx: a human experiment that has been surgically modified to give them the abilities of ghouls to better hunt and fight ghouls. It's been stated they were created to surpass Arima (a celebrated, undefeated CCG investigator) and eradicate the most dangerous ghouls but their very nature makes them unpopular among their peers.
Mutsuki is the compassionate member of the Quinx Squad and extremely loyal to Sasaki but also meek in his ways. He struggles in his role as an investigator and further more, as a Quinx. He nevertheless cares deeply for his Squad, wishing to better him in order to protect them and not burden them. Following the Auction Raid, not only has the Squad become more accepted but he has gained new found confidence in his two rank promotion from Rank 3 to Rank 1. Although he still struggles, he is determined to overcome his weaknesses and prove becoming someone worthy of being an investigator for the CCG as well as someone worthy of his Squad.
PERSONALITY:At first meeting, Mutsuki does not come across as someone that would last long in the demanding and sometimes cruel world of being a ghoul investigator with the CCG. He suffers from poor health, doesn't do well around the sight of blood and struggles to keep up with the stronger members of his squad. Honestly, at first, he doesn't believe he deserves his job and finds it hard to overcome the discouragement he constantly feels pressing down on him. Whether from both his CCG peers that do not trust his squad or just himself for this believed lack of ability he holds, it can be hard on someone. It's all feelings that have followed him since his time in the CCG Academy where he was bullied by his peers with names and spread horrible rumors that he killed cats or his entire family. It's the sort of thing that sticks to a person and doesn't let go.
Because of this, he can be rather self-hating at times and his confidence is visibly cracked even without knowing him. Mutsuki justifies this negatively by believing if he was stronger that it wouldn't happen and thus, he has to get stronger. It causes a lot of frustration and anger for him but it pushes him to try harder. Despite all of his internal hate over his own weaknesses, he has an overwhelming want to help others and risks himself at times to do just that even throwing himself into a taxi with a serial killer just to protect a woman from becoming the killer's next victim. Also, despite the mistreatment from his peers, he shows a lot of respect toward other CCG personnel and invigilators.
Despite this insecurities, he is genuinely a good person and tries to reach out to each member of the Qs squad. He works hard to hold the squad together by playing mediator during arguments and just... being there for them. He's almost like the poster child for compassion: overly kind to others, thoughtful and terribly selfless. Mutsuki truly spends a lot of his time caring for the well-being of others before ever considering himself in the matter. It's honestly really not a great way to live but it's a way that works well for him. He has been desperately searching for some kind of purpose in his life following the death of his family to ghouls when he was in junior high. Although he isn't sure if he can find that through the battlefield, he tries instead to do it at home by being the glue to hold them together and figurative shoulder to lean on.
One of his better relationships within the squad is with the Qs mentor, Haise Sasaki. Mutsuki really looks up to Sasaki and the mentor is one of the few people that he opens up to on a personal level. It's with Sasaki that his loyalty is shown without any sort of fault. Disrespect toward Sasaki is one of the quickest ways to anger Mutsuki and he even demands Urie apologizes to their mentor, despite rarely speaking up to the former squad leader much before. They also connect on a level outside of work both enjoying reading books and exploring the worlds presented inside them.
Another important relationship in the squad is with the former squad leader mentioned before, Kuki Urie. Because they approach work and their mentor differently, there isn't a lot in common between them. Urie is one of the few people to ever make Mutsuki angry but he nevertheless still cares for his teammate. Mutsuki risks himself to save Urie from Big Madame during the raid and again when Urie goes out of control. He reassures him during his breakdown, letting him know that he wasn't in the way and letting him know that he understood—being alone was agonizing.
Following the Auction raid, he has been promoted twice (a rarity apparently) and has grown somewhat with confidence. Although he wonders if he is deserving of the promotion but has begun to devote himself more to work and his new training. Now, he actually seem to be working to bettering himself both psychically and mentally. No longer drowning himself so much in doubt and worries over his abilities.
That said—perhaps one of the biggest pieces that makes up Mutsuki's character deals with his feelings toward his biological sex. Born female, he was never able to rid himself of his feelings of discomfort toward living as a woman. Following the death of his parents and older brother, he agrees to entering a CCG Academy with one request he be allowed to live and be referred to as a man. Despite his gentle nature, he uses very tough and aggressively masculine (and rather informal) pronouns and it can be something of a shock considering how cautious he is about offending others. In fact, one of the few things Mutsuki actually outright despises is the male gaze and finds it disgusting. Nevertheless, he happy to finally be able to live as he wants.
All in all, Mutsuki is a very kind and gentle person. He strives to be better not just for himself but for his mentor and his squad. Although he still lacks confidence, he has begun to believe more in himself and his abilities. Dedicating himself instead to furthering himself as an investigator for the CCG.
POWER:First, the canon-specific terms:
❚❚ KAKUHOU — A sack-like organ found only inside ghouls. The purpose of the kakuhou is to store and stock "Rc cells" which are cells that flow like blood but can also become as quite solid. It's because of this that it is referred to as "liquid muscles" within canon. These Rc cells that are found in ghouls and humans alike are the nutrients ghouls need to survive. When the cells are released from the kakuhou and pierce the skin, it forms the kagune. Just as humans and ghouls both possess Rc cells they also possess an Rc factor. Average humans have a count anywhere between 200-500 while ghouls possess a count of 1000-8000.
Kakuhou are also the main component in the manufacture of the CCG's Quinque weaponry.
❚❚ KAGUNE — The ghoul's predatory organ. It functions as a weapon for ghouls and makes fighting (or killing) easier. As mentioned, a kagune is formed by Rc cells which means that a kagune is capable of being very flexible in its movements but also extremely sturdy and hard to destroy with normal means. The appearance and the abilities of the kagune differ wildly from ghoul to ghoul but there are four main types based on where on the body it is located. Each type can, characteristically, subdue another type but this also very much depends on the ghouls in question.UKAKU — Located at the shoulder area. Ukaku-types possess naturally high agility that specialize in using their lightweight kagune for high-speed attacks and long distant fighting. It's not uncommon to see one use their kagune as a projectile or to shield themselves. They lack endurance though and boast a short supply of Rc cells which can very easily exhaust them before a fight is over. Ukaku-types can use their speed and mobility to bring down bikaku-types but koukaku-types can easily guard against their attacks before counterattacking.
KOUKAKU — Located below the shoulder blades. Koukaku-types boast very high density of Rc cells and because of this, their kagune a extremely sturdy and naturally suited for defense. If on the offense, their attacks are slow but hard hitting. Because it is so heavy, koukaku-types are the slowest and can suffer in a fight because of this. Because of their high defenses, they can survive an onslaught from an ukaku-type but the severe striking power of a rinkaku-type can be devastating against a slow koukaku-type and easily break through their defenses.
RINKAKU — Located at the waist. Rinkaku-types are known for their brute strength in striking. They come in fast and hard with it in mind to end the fight as soon possible if allowed. As a result of their type having Rc cells that easily bind together and that are much closer to liquid, they also possess an incredible regenerating factor. However, the binding force of their kagune is weak and thus makes rinkaku kagune easy to break. Their speed and brute power makes it easy for them to utterly destroy the sturdy but slow koukaku-type kagune but can be overwhelmed by a bikaku-type's more balanced kagune and easily have their kagune cut off.
BIKAKU — Located at the tailbone. The only type that does no have any notable strengths or weaknesses. All around, they have decent offense, defense and speed with the power to use their kagune at a medium range. They are referred to as the "trump card" of kagune and are known for their all around balance of skills. It is the bikaku-types that make for the preferred type of kagune to be used making Quinque. While a bikaku-type can use their balanced skills to attack rinkaku-types safety, they are no match for the much faster ukaku-types that can be overwhelmed by their fast and long-range attacks.
❚❚ QUINQUE — The CCG's weapons fashioned from a ghoul's kagune. They are manufactured from kakuhou and the weapon itself emits electrical signals to stimulate the kakuhou and release the kagune's power. Although they usually retain the shape of the kagune that the ghoul used in life, the quinque can be fashioned into a variety of weapons: axes, guns, shields, whips and blades. Quinque cannot change its shape during use like a ghoul can possibly do and cannot absorb or store more Rc cells so it cannot be made stronger than it already is.
Mutsuki carries two Quinque; a pair of rinkaku daggers called Abksol and Ifraft that are sharp enough to cut through ghoul flesh and bone.
Now, for what Tooru more closely deals with:
❚❚ QUINX — CANON. Quinx are humans with a modified Quinque (the aforementioned weapons used by the CCG manufactured from a ghoul's kakuhou) implanted into their bodies. Unlike previous surgeries that created one-eyed ghouls, the Quinx surgery is different in that the kakuhou is coated in Quinque steel and controlled by a special system of frames. It is believed that coating it in this steel is what allows the Quinx to remain human but still possess the powers of ghouls while the system of frames regulate function. There are five levels to these frames with each frame increasing or deceasing the kakuhou's output by 20% depending on if the frame is opened or closed. Currently, Tooru (like the other Quinx outside of Urie) is at an F2 or a 40% allowance of the kakuhou's potential output. Nevertheless, despite not being a "true" one-eyed ghoul, he has the appearance and abilities of one on a certain level. The following falls under the characteristics of the Quinx—GHOUL PHYSIOLOGY: To begin, perhaps the biggest notice that Mutsuki is not truly human is his kakugan. This term denotes a Ghoul's eye when the pupil turns red and the sclera turn black. Typically, ghouls enter this state at will but it can also happen when their excited, hungry or using their kagune. Unlike ghouls, however, the Quinx have grey sclera instead of black and Mutsuki suffers from an inability to properly control his so it remains active at all times. Due to a particular enzyme their bodies produce, Ghouls are not to digest any type of human food besides coffee or water and must feed on humans and other ghouls. Quinx, on the other hand, can digest human food still and do not crave human flesh. However, eating human flesh still allows them a certain boost in power and increases their overall abilities for a short time. This is believed to be possible because although the Quinx possess an Rc factor count higher than a human (500), they are still below the minimum range of a Ghoul (1000) and it is unknown just what would occur if they passed into this minimum. Mutsuki has an Rc level of 655, the lowest of the squad and barely above average.
Much like Ghouls, the Quinx are able to produce a kagune but due the steel covering their kakuhou and the frame system in place it is severely restricted compared to a normal kagune. Mutsuki possess a bikaku-type kagune which means that his kagune is produced from his tailbone and is known as a more balanced sort of kagune. Unfortunately, he does not have much control over his kagune and struggles to actually use it. Because of this, his kagune has only made one appearance in the manga thus far and only in a defensive role so it is still unknown just how he'd use it in a fight. Because of the frame system and his own limitations, however, he would easily lose a fight against more experienced fighters even if he managed to call out his kagune. On top of this, Quinx also tire out more easily if they use their kagune and it's because of this that the Quinx also carry Quinque. Now, along with the kakugan and kagune are several other physical characteristics that make up a ghoul that he possess to some degree:
ENHANCED CONDITION: Quinx are allotted a number of Ghoul's enhanced abilities though at a much lower setting and it further differs between members of the Squad. Nevertheless, unlike a normal human, Mutsuki possess enhanced agility, durability, stamina and strength. His enhanced abilities allow him to fight for much longer and actually survive in the end. His enhanced durability allows him to take numerous blows without immediately succumbing to the effects and being able to get back up. The increase in his agility allows him to respond to situations faster and with better reflexes or jump higher than normal. His increased durability works hand in hand with his healing factor, allowing him to continue moving until the regeneration takes holds even after being pierced through the leg or through his stomach. However, unlike Ghouls, the Quinx can be hurt by most regular solid metals and tire out far more easily when using their kagune. With an increase to his stamina, he can function for longer periods of time without having to rest and allowing him to be physically be up and moving for longer periods of time compared to a normal human. Ghouls are typically four to seven times stronger than a normal human but because of Mutsuki's low Rc count he probably only ranges between one or maybe two times stronger than the average human. Meaning that although he isn't able to send someone flying when he kicks them, it's still going to hurt.
ENHANCED SENSES: Although Ghouls have all around better senses than humans, for the most part, Mutsuki's senses have not increased dramatically aside from his eyesight. His eyesight is incredible keen, even with one eye always covered. He makes out features and details from long distances like through a taxi cab window at night or on someone sitting far away in balcony seating, while on stage with a spotlight shining down on him. His hearing and sense of smell, although not on par with some of the others in the Squad, are also slightly higher than that of your average human.
HEALING FACTOR: Like Ghouls, Quinx heals considerably faster than normal humans and Mutsuki is no exception. Their healing takes place on a molecular level, regenerating any part of the anatomy that has been damaged and allowing him to survive injuries that would otherwise knock a person down. Although his healing factor can sometimes take a while to kick it, he has one of the best healing rates of the group and has survived being impaled through the leg, arm and twice through the stomach. Despite these injuries, he is usually shown not long after without significant impairment besides noticeable exhaustion.
❚❚ PATHOKINESIS — NON-CANON. The ability to sense and change the emotions of people around him or emotional manipulation. It's born from his want to co-exist peacefully with his squad and other investigators. The ability allows him to induce different emotions onto someone and influence their current mood. Examples would be him resolving tension by inducing a sense of calmness or alleviating someone's sadness by inducing happiness or excitement. Mutsuki could also induce the opposite sort of emotions and being about feelings of anger, hatred, suffering or sorrow in someone just as easily.
The emotions he creates only last as long as he is around. Once he leaves, the original emotions will resurface and come back out. This power would be limited to a small area around him, no more than twenty feet and for it to actually work he has to see the person. If someone was to move out of the influence space or come at him from behind then the power just will not work. Also, the more people he tries to use it on the more the actual effect weakens. So while he could utterly calm one person down, it wouldn't work well on a group of five and only calm them down a faction of the moment he could do on one person.

Um, hello... [ Off to a good start already. ] I had something of a question, if you'd be willing to listen and answer.
[ He offers a small but nervous smile to the camera. Finally, he clears his throat and tries again— ]
The question I wanted to ask was what sort of books do you enjoy? We all come from different worlds so it got me curious about what may or... may not be popular back home for you. Even for us that come from similar worlds, there could be noticeable differences in the sort of books that have been written and published throughout history or even recently. Much like a popular author existing in one but never being published in another.
[ He doesn't talk a lot, honestly and it probably shows in the way he rambles. Books were important to him and usually he had Sasaki to go over these things with but his mentor wasn't here. ]
Ah... that's right. I'm rather fond of most fiction books myself especially the ones that take events in history and look at them differently. [ A beat. ] Which I guess is rather like this entire world for me...
[ Again, he smiles. ] Thank you for listening and I'd love to hear your answers.
FINAL NOTES: If possibly, I'd like for him to keep his messenger bag that carries a few unimportant items; a book of fiction, papers, pens and a map of Tokyo. It also carries his Quinque, two rinkaku daggers.
